I became a believer in the benefits of tai chi. Within six months, my mom no longer needed her cane, and she was not getting lung infections nearly as often. Her doctors had recommended tai chi as an excellent exercise for both her legs and her lungs. She asked if I would go to tai chi classes with her. She was walking with a cane and was getting bronchial infections and pneumonia every few months. In the late ’90s, my mom moved back to Arizona. By the time I got married, I wasn’t dancing much at all. After I graduated with my electrical engineering degree, I spent less and less time dancing. During college, I regularly participated in Folk Dance and Square Dance as well as taking dance classes in college. I continued to take lessons through high school. I took ballet, jazz, tap, and acrobatics. Trudy, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist. In 2015 Pacífico founded the Pacífico Dance Academy. ” Pacífico has been profiled by KCET-TV’s award-winning program “Life & Times” and the nationally syndicated show “American Latino TV,” broadcast to over 50 million homes in the U.S. Times,” the Oregon “Mail Tribune,” the Delaware “News Journal,” “Hispanic” magazine and the Spanis h-language daily “La Opinión. The company has been prominently featured in a number of publications and TV spots, both locally and nationally, including the “L.A. For two years, the company was in residence at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts where it taught Mexican Folk Dancing and rehearsed. This initiative intends to build audiences by engaging students in the arts. Pacífico is currently one of the artists on the roster of the Music Center’s Education Division and performs at local schools throughout Los Angeles County. Throughout its 20 year history, Pacífico has put much emphasis on collaborations with educational organizations to produce performances for students from K through 12. Pacífico has twice been recognized as part of the Irvine DanceMaker awards. Pacífico 's educational workshops provide the students with an overview and further knowledge of all the rich components that make up the beautiful culture of Mexican Folklore. In a conjunction with major partners like The Music Center ,The Ford Amphitheatre and most recently The Orange County Performing Arts Center, Pacífico has been educating young children and adults all over the U.S., including the prestigious Kennedy Center. In 2001, Pacífico Dance Company along with Mariachi Sol de Mexico made a historic visit to North Korea and the People's Republic of China as part of a cultural arts exchange. Local southern California venues include The Carpenter Center in Long Beach, the Cerritos Performing Arts Center, the Redlands Bowl, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, The Getty Center, and the Universal Amphitheatre. Pacífico was also honored to perform in residence at the world-famous Kennedy Center in 2007. The company has performed at many venues throughout the Southwestern United States including Utah, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. They have collaborated with several well known musicians including Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez, Pablo Montero, Conjunto Jardin and Pepe Aguilar for live performances. P re-Hispanic works from Concheros and traditional dances from Jalisco, Guerrero, Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Michoacan, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas and Veracruz round out the repertoire.įor six consecutive years the Company perfo rmed at the prestigious Dance Kaleidoscope Summer Dance Festival in Los Angeles. Some of the most ambitious works include Frida Kahlo, the Legend of La Llorona, Sal ó n M é xico, Mictlan, Calacas Clandestinas, and the Virgin of Guadalup e. These brilliant artists collaborate to present both traditional and innovative works that combine the essence of traditional styles with modern dance idioms. Comprised of 40 accomp lished dancers and musicians, the company prides itself on educating culturally diverse communities as well as, providing Hispanic audiences with a forum for developin g pride in their own heritage.
